JAKARTA - The street market on Jalan Surabaya in Indonesia's capital, Jakarta has been a hotspot for locals and foreigners searching for rare antiques since the 1960s. Today, over 200 vendors sell antiques ranging from Chinese porcelian to Indonesian artifacts such as stone statues. Adjas Marzuki, owner of two shops on Jalan Surabaya stated artifacts found in his shop had been pulled from ship wrecks off the coast of Sumatera. He claimed an influx of Chinese customers were prompted by the Chinese government to return antiques to the mainland, offering them subsidies as an incentive.
